Tokyo/Hong Kong, April 16, 2026 - Asian stock markets posted strong gains on Thursday as renewed optimism surrounding a possible second round of US-Iran peace talks and a potential extension of the fragile ceasefire eased investor concerns over prolonged disruptions in the Middle East.

The MSCI Asia Pacific Index opened up around 0.4% and continued climbing, with major benchmarks posting solid advances. Japan's Nikkei 225 surged as much as 2.4% to reach a new all-time high near 59,500, while South Korea's KOSPI jumped over 2% and Hong Kong's Hang Seng also traded higher. Gains were broad-based, with energy and shipping-related stocks recovering as traders bet on reduced geopolitical risk.
The rally follows signals from both Washington and Tehran that fresh negotiations could resume soon, possibly returning to Islamabad under Pakistani mediation. President Donald Trump has indicated that talks may occur "over the next two days," while reports suggest Iran is considering measures to avoid direct confrontation over the Strait of Hormuz. The current two-week ceasefire, which remains in effect until around April 22, has so far held despite the ongoing U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports.
Lower oil prices also supported sentiment. Brent crude retreated from recent highs as hopes for de-escalation reduced fears of a full closure of the critical waterway, which handles nearly 20% of global oil supplies. This provided relief to energy-import dependent economies across Asia.
"Investors are unwinding the risk premium built up over the past weeks," said one regional analyst. "Any sign of diplomatic progress could further stabilize markets and support economic growth in the region."
However, caution remains. The U.S. blockade continues, and any breakdown in talks could quickly reverse the gains. Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, currently on a diplomatic tour in the Middle East, is actively working to build support for renewed dialogue.
Wall Street's record close overnight also provided positive momentum, with strong corporate earnings adding to the upbeat mood.
