Islamabad: Pakistan has stepped into the global spotlight as a significant diplomatic mediator following its role in brokering a fragile two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and senior Pakistani officials, including Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, played an active part in facilitating the ceasefire announced on April 8, 2026. The truce, which covers all fronts including Lebanon, came after intense back-channel diplomacy by Pakistan to prevent further escalation in the six-week-old conflict.
Pakistan is currently hosting high-level ceasefire talks in Islamabad between US and Iranian delegations. Although the latest round of direct negotiations ended without a full agreement, Pakistani leaders continue to urge both sides to maintain the ceasefire and return to dialogue.
While Pakistani officials and state media have highlighted widespread international appreciation for the country's mediation efforts, claims circulating on social media that the Prime Minister and top officials received "over 200 calls from more than 50 countries" remain unverified by independent sources. Several world leaders, including from Türkiye, France, China, and Gulf countries, have indeed engaged with Pakistan and acknowledged its bridging role.
Pakistan has positioned itself as a neutral facilitator, leveraging its relations with both Washington and Tehran to push for de-escalation and a lasting peaceful settlement.
