Violence, however, cannot be condoned; taking the law into one’s own hands only breeds chaos and undermines justice. The government’s response — a mere 15-day ban on Geo News — is woefully insufficient. Such a light penalty fails to deter future offenses and signals a lack of seriousness toward protecting the sanctity of religious figures. Geo News itself should thank PEMRA for intervening legally, as the regulatory body’s action, though mild, may have shielded the network from more severe extremist backlash. In my opinion, the proper course is a strict legal framework with harsher penalties that punish blasphemy without encouraging mob violence. Furthermore, media outlets must exercise greater caution and respect when covering matters of faith. Apologists for Geo News are not defending press freedom; they are defending negligence and insensitivity. Accountability, not defensiveness, is what is needed.
