On May 28, 1998, Pakistan conducted five nuclear detonations at the Ras Koh hills in the Chagai district, completing a rapid sequence of tests that followed an earlier round in May. This moment marked the culmination of a twenty six year national effort to alter the strategic balance of power in South Asia. Military leadership, scientists, engineers, and political stakeholders had nurtured a program that grew from a civilian research project into a full fledged strategic enterprise. Pakistan argued that the tests were essential to deter aggression and to restore parity with its larger neighbor, which had already demonstrated its own nuclear capability in 1974. The decision was met with domestic jubilation and international condemnation. Western capitals imposed sanctions and signaled concern about proliferation while also acknowledging that Pakistan had become a credible regional actor. The tests changed Pakistan on several levels, reforming its defense planning, its science and engineering ecosystems, and its engagement with the outside world. They spurred investments in technology and defense infrastructure while complicating diplomacy with key partners including the United States and European states. In hindsight, the tests are seen as a turning point that unleashed regional arms racing and raised the stakes for crisis stability in the subcontinent. From a contemporary perspective, the move delivered a sense of national pride and strategic autonomy but also exposed Pakistan to external pressure and the moral hazard of nuclear brinkmanship. In my view, the tests were a necessary assertion of sovereignty in a dangerous regional context, yet they underscored the perils of nuclear escalation and the urgent need for sustained regional security dialogue and stronger nonproliferation and crisis stability measures.
